Existential concerns are among the most important issues affecting the contemporary human psyche and have found a special place in psychological literature, especially the existentialist school. On the other hand, Rumi's works also contain profound reflections on existence, the meaning of life, suffering, and liberation. The present study aims to conduct a comparative study of human existential concerns (i.e., death, loneliness, emptiness, and freedom) from the perspective of two schools of thought: existential psychology and Rumi's mystical thoughts. The present study was conducted with a qualitative-comparative method and using content analysis. The research data were extracted and analyzed from the main sources of existential psychology and the works of thinkers in this field, such as Erwin Yalom, Viktor Frankl, and Rollo May, and the works of Rumi (Masnavi Manavi, Divan Shams, and Fiyyeh Ma Fiyyeh). The findings of the study show that both schools of thought accept the four concerns as fundamental realities of human existence and offer solutions to deal with them. Existential psychology, with its emphasis on awareness, responsibility, and the search for meaning, and Rumi’s thought, with its emphasis on love, annihilation in the name of God, and return to the truth of existence, both refer to a kind of authentic living. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the concept of man and existential concerns are very fundamental in the views of Rumi and existential psychology thinkers and play a pivotal role in human psychological well-being. Also, the findings of this study can pave the way for the development of interdisciplinary approaches in the fields of psychology, philosophy, and Islamic mysticism and provide new solutions for dealing with semantic and existential crises in modern human life. |
