Cinema, as one of the most influential arts and media, plays a significant role in reflecting and interpreting deep human concerns. Among these concerns, issues such as death, meaning, solitude (loneliness), and freedom hold a special position in existential philosophy and psychology. Therefore, investigating these concepts in Iranian cinema can provide a clear picture of how Iranian society culturally and socially confronts these fundamental issues. The present study aimed to qualitatively analyze the content of existential concerns (death, meaning, solitude, and freedom) in selected Iranian films over recent decades. The research adopted a qualitative approach based on the method of Qualitative Content Analysis. The study population consisted of twenty-seven meaning-oriented films with existential themes produced over the past four decades, which had received national and international recognition. In total, ten prominent films were selected for detailed analysis, and ten additional films were chosen for comparative review. Data were collected through film observation, extraction of scenes, dialogues, and primary themes, and were subsequently analyzed within the theoretical framework of Existential Psychology, specifically considering the viewpoints of Irvin Yalom, Rollo May, and Viktor Frankl. The findings revealed that the concern of "freedom and responsibility of choice" emerged as the central focus in the selected works. This concern primarily manifested in the context of moral conflicts and the individual's accountability for the consequences of their choices. Furthermore, existential solitude was mostly presented in the form of imposed isolation or "elective silence," and death was introduced as a catalyst/driving force for existential awakening. Overall, Iranian cinema has reflected existential concerns in a contextualized (indigenized) manner, emphasizing the individual’s complete responsibility toward their own existence. The results of this study, while clarifying the representation methods of existential concerns in Iranian cinema, contribute to enriching the literature of existential psychology and film studies. They also provide a foundation for utilizing Iranian films in Cinematherapy and promoting mental health.
