Abstract: The progress of multimedia and internet technologies has given rise to a novel mode of communication called fansubbing, which links anime enthusiasts worldwide. This study investigated the taboo terms’ translation and the most frequently used strategies in the translation of taboo terms and expressions in the English as well as Persian fansubbed versions of Family Guy and South Park series. The research adopted a qualitative and descriptive research design to fulfill its objectives. The research began with a qualitative procedure to analyze and evaluate the content of Family Guy and South Park series in terms of taboo terms in English and their equivalent translations in Persian using Wardhaugh’s model (1986). Afterwards, different texts of the fansubbed series were compared and then carefully analyzed to identify the translation strategies used for translation of taboo terms drawing on the Gottlieb (1992) model. Finally, this study used the descriptive approach to provide a list of the most frequent strategies used in the translation of taboo terms. The findings revealed that taboo words and expressions were not adequately and appropriately translated in terms of Persian vulgar language and culture norms by comparing the fansubbers’ translation of taboo terms and their common equivalences in Persian language. The findings also showed that the translators applied more or less all five basic strategies in the model such as equivalence, amplification, substitution, elimination, and attenuation while fansubbing these animations. The study concluded that the most commonly used translation technique is equivalence (45%). The second most used technique is substitution (18%) followed by amplification (17%). The results of the study have major implications for translation field including translator training, translation teachers and translator students.
